SUMMARY:International Women's Day
DESCRIPTION:International Women’s Day (IWD)\, an international celebration\, honors the social\, economical\, and political achievements made by women everywhere. \nThis secular holiday dates back to the early 1900’s\, a time of turbulent growth in the industrialized world that saw growing demands for women to have the right to vote. Among other relevant historical events\, it commemorates the “Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire”\, on March 25\, 1911 in New York City\, where over 140 women lost their lives. \nBorn from the socialist and labor movements\, International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. Promoted by the United Nations since 1975\, International Women’s Day is\, in the words of the UN\, “a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions\, whether national\, ethnic\, linguistic\, cultural\, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments\, and more importantly\, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.” \nFor decades\, IWD has increased in strength annually. Women’s organizations and governments around the world have celebrated IWD annually on the 8th of March by holding large-scale events that honor women’s progress and highlight areas where women’s rights still need to be advanced. \nIWD is an occasion that can be celebrated by all community groups that believe women’s rights are human rights. \nEach year on March 8\, hundreds of International Women’s Day events occur all around the world. IWD events range from small random informal gatherings to large-scale highly organized events. All celebrate women’s advancement and highlight the need for continued vigilance and action. The day is about honoring all women and their accomplishments\, this can done by taking part in a large organized activity or by simply honoring the women in one’s life with flowers\, a small gift\, or even a thank you.

SUMMARY:The Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 22\, 2026\, 02:00pm – 04:00pm\n\n\n\n\nLocation :  Reason Center\, 1300 Ethan Way\, Ste 675\, Sac.\, map \n\nPresenter Anne M. Rewell of the CSUS Renaissance Society will tell us about the Underground Railroad\, and explore the routes utilized by escaping enslaved people in the Antibellum South\, as well as those who collaborated to assist\, the secret networks\, the waystations and rest stops. The Railroad (not a literal railroad) brought together a diverse group of people in the fight against slavery and slavers. From the deep south\, the journey to Canada and sometimes to Mexico (yes Mexico abolished slavery in 1937\, and if you didn’t know\, shame on you for sleeping in Mrs. Grundy’s history class). Perilous for all involved\, it requiring courage and ingenuity\, and sometimes pretty some fast thinking. \nContact :  See the AOF Contact page (http://www.aofonline.org/contact.html)\nA free event with free parking. Open to the public. Doors open 1:45pm. Bring snacks or a beverage to share if you can. AOF provides cool\, clear water.

SUMMARY:Sacramento Darwin Day
DESCRIPTION:Location :  MOSAC Science Museum\, 400 Jibboom St\, Sacramento\, see map \n\nPresenting the 29th fabulous year of the Darwin Day Birthday Gala\, Sacramento’s coolest\, most singular\, most go-to event of science and humanity\, brought to you by area science advocates\, civic groups and nerds on too much coffee. An in-person event at the MOSAC Science Mujseum\, marking “Chuck” Darwin’s 217rd birthday. Open to all. But … you’ll need a ticket.\nDarwin Day is a science-rush like no other\, a celebration of scientific inquiry honoring of the life and work of the great Charles Darwin (b. 12 February 1809)\, sponsored worldwide by community and educational groups. Strictly speaking it’s not an AOF event\, but AOF helped found the local gala\, and continues to support it and commend it to all our friends in the Sacramento community of reason. Because science! And what’s science but reason in the trenches? \nThe main speaker will be Rick Grosberg of the University of California\, Davis. “Throughout my career\, my research has centered on the major evolutionary transitions in the history of life\, from DNA to genes\, from unicellular to multicellular organisms\, and from families to complex societies of multicellular organisms. I’m especially interested in the mechanisms that regulate the inevitable conflicts of interest between different levels of biological organization. I’m also fascinated and attracted by the history of ideas\, and — as a marine evolutionary biologist — to Darwin’s notoriously complicated and misunderstood relationship with the sea. Over the last few years\, my research has inescapably emphasized the impacts of climate change and other human activities on the ecological and evolutionary resilience of marine populations and ecosystems. And\, most recently\, I have explored the causes and consequences of differing patterns of biodiversity across the major realms of life.” \nFor background on this mind-growing event\, visit https://darwinday.org/\, the international website. \nHow to attend:\nPlease get a ticket. It’s not pricey\, and this is no time to grinch. Price is just $25 general\, $20 for museum members\, or $10 if you have a Student ID. Ticket link: https://visitmosac.org/darwin-day/. As a bonus you’ll get sweet\, sweet birthday cake.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day celebrates the life and work of Charles Darwin\, a secular holiday widely celebrated within the global community with participation from all sectors of society. Even mainline churches have participated\, celebrating the day as Evolution Sunday or Evolution Weekend (see the Clergy Letter Project for details). \nUnder any of these names\, this day celebrates the wonder and beauty of both science and humanity\, and serve to recognize and celebrate the achievements of a man who cast a bright\, explanatory light on reality\, our self-knowledge\, and on the world of which we are part. \nCharles Darwin contributed to our understanding at the deepest level\, forever changed how we see ourselves within this vast\, impersonal universe\, and brought us a paradigm shift of seismic proportions. He symbolizes the brave\, human enterprise of science in confronting the mystery of existence. His life and work exemplify the spirit of wonder\, curiosity and adventure along with the excitement that the quest for knowledge and understanding can provide. \nThe Darwin Day Program\, an educational non-profit organization\, encourages interested groups and individuals throughout the world to participate in the annual celebration of Darwin Day by coordinating events and activities in their area on or around February 12. The program also offers a year-round educational outreach project to help in reaching the goal of improving the public’s understanding of science and foster an appreciation for our shared humanity. \nDarwin Day\, Evolution Sunday and Evolution Weekend encourage us to come together to champion science and humanity throughout our global community. They let us celebrate the astonishing engagement of our common intelligence with the wonder and excitement of life in the universe. If you agree\, visit the National Darwin Day site and sign the petition calling for national recognition of this day. Then\, visit Epic of Evolution for a great adventure.
